Preliminary Task - My Magazine

Task Summary
For our preliminary task, we had to design a magazine primarily for our school. The magazine had to consist of school-related images, masthead and content. We were given the chance to explore the effects used in making magazines, for example the colour palette and buzz words.
This task was necessary as an introduction to making our actual magazines. Although it wasn't based on music, it was an opportunity to develop our skills and learn from mistakes.

I have learnt various skills from making this magazine. Firstly, I have learnt the importance of placement and the design of the front cover, what aspects of the magazine are needed to make it successful. For example, the main picture should have the person looking directly at the audience. Buzz-words should be in bright colours so to attract the readers' attention and persuade them to buy the magazine for its content. There should be a main topic for the magazine, then sub-topics and further attractions such as posters or extra information.
I thought that my main picture was successful because of its layout. I really liked the blurred out look from the test tube, to further represent that the importance of the magazine is the person in the background, the test-tube being of lesser importance, but still important.

We had to take our own photos and come up with our own masthead, as well as subtitles and add in any other effects such as puffs and buzz words. The main cover photo was taken in the science laboratory where we had permission to use the lab coats and goggles.

Overall, I found this task very useful to see how I can work with the skills I've learnt. I can now have something to base my music magazine from, and something to improve and learn from.

  1. Great work Helen, an excellent first attempt at a magazine. You have made some lovely reflections, but could now consider what you were pleased with and what skills you have consolidated?
